Navratri, a festival celebrated with great fervor across India, marks the worship of the divine feminine energy in various forms. The first day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Shailaputri, who is revered as the embodiment of the mountains. Devotees observe special rituals and offer makeup and flowers to seek her blessings during this auspicious time.

Rituals to Worship Goddess Shailaputri:

Cleanse and Decorate the Altar:

Begin by cleaning the puja altar or the area where you intend to perform the worship. Decorate it with fresh flowers, rangoli, and other traditional decorations.

Pran-Pratishtha:

Install the image or idol of Goddess Shailaputri on the altar. Before starting the worship, perform the Pran-Pratishtha, a ritual that symbolizes the infusion of life into the deity.

Offerings:

 

Offerings to the goddess typically include milk, honey, curd, sugar, and ghee. Light incense sticks and a ghee lamp to create a sacred atmosphere.

Chanting Mantras:

Recite mantras dedicated to Goddess Shailaputri. The following mantra is commonly chanted:
“ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥”
(Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah)

Aarti:

Conclude the worship with the singing of aarti. You can use a traditional aarti plate with a camphor flame or a ghee lamp while singing praises to the goddess.

Makeup for Goddess Shailaputri:

Goddess Shailaputri is depicted as a divine and elegant deity. If you choose to adorn an idol or image of her, you can follow these guidelines for makeup:

Attire:

Dress the idol or image in traditional attire, which typically includes a saree or a simple, elegant gown.

Bindi:

Apply a small red bindi on the forehead of the deity, symbolizing her married status.

Jewelry:

Adorn the goddess with minimal jewelry, such as earrings, a necklace, and bangles, to enhance her divine appearance.

Crown:

Place a crown on the goddess’s head, which can be decorated with flowers or gemstones, to signify her royal status.

Sandalwood Paste:

Extraction of sandalwood paste from the sandalwood using a stone and adding water.

Apply a paste of sandalwood on the forehead of the goddess, symbolizing purity and tranquility.

Floral Offerings:

Flowers play a significant role in Hindu worship, symbolizing purity and devotion. When offering flowers to Goddess Shailaputri, consider using the following varieties:

Marigold:

Marigold flowers are a popular choice for worship due to their vibrant colors and association with positive energy.

Lotus :

The lotus flower symbolizes purity and enlightenment, making it an ideal choice for offering to the goddess.

Jasmine:

Jasmine flowers are known for their sweet fragrance, signifying devotion and humility.

Rose:
