Indian cricket fans are speculating about the potential return of Mohammed Shami, one of India’s premier ODI bowlers, ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite being reportedly fit, Shami is yet to receive clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA), raising questions about his readiness and necessity in Team India’s lineup for the high-stakes tournament.

Shami’s Remarkable ODI Record

With 101 ODI matches under his belt, Mohammed Shami has scalped 195 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 5.55 and an average of 23.68. These numbers highlight his consistency and ability to trouble batsmen in the 50-over format. Shami last featured for India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, where his performances reaffirmed his value as a spearhead in India’s bowling attack.

The ICC Champions Trophy demands experienced players who can handle pressure, and Shami’s record indicates he could be pivotal in breaking through opposition batting lineups. If included, his presence could make life difficult for rival batsmen, giving India an edge in the tournament.

Current Pace Options for Team India

India’s current pace attack includes Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana, all of whom have been effective in various capacities. Bumrah’s lethal accuracy, Siraj’s ability to swing the ball, and Arshdeep’s proficiency in death overs provide India with a solid pace unit. However, Shami’s return could add depth and experience, strengthening the attack further.

Fans and experts believe Shami’s inclusion could bolster India’s chances in the Champions Trophy, particularly against strong batting units. His knack for early breakthroughs and skill in the death overs makes him a valuable asset.

Fitness Clearance from NCA: A Crucial Factor

While Shami is reportedly fit, his availability hinges on the NCA’s fitness clearance. The timeline for this clearance remains uncertain, leaving fans and selectors in anticipation. His recovery and readiness will be closely monitored as the tournament approaches.
