The widow of Corey Comperatore, who was killed during an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump at a rally, has revealed she has not received a condolence call from Trump but did decline a call from US President Joe Biden. Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer firefighter and father of two, died shielding his family during the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Helen Comperatore, Corey’s wife, spoke to the media about her decision not to engage in a conversation with Biden, a Democrat. “I didn’t talk to Biden,” Helen stated. “I didn’t want to talk to him. My husband was a devout Republican, and he would not have wanted me to talk to him.”
Helen described her husband as her “hero” and recounted his last words, “get down!” as he shielded his wife and children from the gunfire. Despite her grief, Helen expressed no animosity towards Biden, focusing her grievance on the actions of the 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed by Secret Service agents at the scene.
“I don’t have any ill will towards Joe Biden. I’m not one of those people that gets involved in politics,” she said. “I support Trump. That’s who I’m voting for, but I don’t have ill will towards Biden. He didn’t do anything bad to my husband. A 20-year-old despicable kid did.”
In the wake of the shooting, Trump took to Truth Social to commend the rapid response of the United States Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies. He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims, writing, “I want to thank the United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”
The Republican presidential candidate further expressed his sorrow, stating he will “hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”
In support of the victims’ families, a GoFundMe page authorized by Trump has been established, raising over $4.6 million as of Tuesday. The funds aim to provide financial assistance to the families affected by the tragic event.
