In an exhilarating start to their T20I series, the West Indies defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the first match held at Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad on August 23. This victory gives the West Indies a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
South Africa, put in to bat first, managed to set a challenging target of 174 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a superb innings from Tristan Stubbs, who scored a blistering 76 off 42 balls. His efforts, however, were not enough to secure a win for the Proteas.
The West Indies’ chase got off to a promising start with openers Alick Athanaze and Shai Hope. Athanaze scored 40 runs off 30 balls while Hope contributed 51 runs off 36 balls, forging an opening partnership of 84 runs in just eight overs. The breakthrough for South Africa came when Ottniel Baartman dismissed Athanaze, but the breakthrough did little to slow down the West Indies’ momentum.
Nicholas Pooran then took center stage, delivering a commanding unbeaten innings of 65 off just 26 balls. Pooran’s aggressive batting included two fours and seven sixes, dismantling the South African bowlers and securing the win for the West Indies. Hope and Pooran added 54 runs for the second wicket off 33 balls before Baartman struck again to dismiss Hope lbw. Despite this, Pooran’s unbeaten innings guided the West Indies to victory with 14 balls to spare.
Earlier, the South African innings was derailed by a potent new-ball attack from Matthew Forde and Shamar Joseph. Forde, in particular, was instrumental with the ball, claiming 3/27, while Joseph supported well with 2/40. Their combined efforts left South Africa in a precarious position at 33/4 after just six overs.
Patrick Kruger and Tristan Stubbs then attempted to revive the innings, putting on a crucial 71-run partnership. Kruger scored 44 runs off 32 balls before Forde returned to break the partnership. Despite Stubbs’ aggressive play in the latter part of the innings, South Africa could only reach 174/7.
Nicholas Pooran was named Player of the Match for his explosive performance with the bat. The two teams will meet again for the second T20I on August 25, with the West Indies looking to build on their winning start to the series.
