Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 24 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday urged citizens to reject extremism and work toward peace and unity, while addressing a gathering at the foundation laying ceremony of the guesthouse at Dargah Hazratbal here.

“Today, I want to say two things to you–and I urge you not just to think about those thoughts, but to act on them,” Sinha said.

“First, I believe there is a solution: we must free our people from the influence of extremist and disruptive elements. Without peace, nothing is possible. Second, the developmental needs of the people must be addressed by accelerating key projects,” he said.

He emphasised that peace is essential for progress saying “I always say that peace is the foundation of progress–and if we are to complete our mission, everyone must stand together. This responsibility does not lie only with the security forces or the police; every citizen shares this duty.”

Calling for collective efforts, Sinha added, “I would like the people of Jammu & Kashmir to join me in praying for peace together.”

The Lieutenant Governor cautioned those in responsible positions against making divisive or unverified statements and urged the hospitality sector to maintain ethical practices.

“Those who are in a responsible position should avoid saying anything out of nowhere. Things like–guests harming the culture here, and if trains are coming, it is like a state-sponsored invasion. If these things are said, it creates issues,” he added.

Addressing concerns related to tourism, he criticised overpricing in the hotel industry. “I have also told the hoteliers that God sees us all, and when rooms worth 10,000 are sold at Rs 50,000, what will happen? We all must introspect,” he said.

Sinha reiterated his appeal to avoid dividing people based on identity. “Those who talked about locals and non-locals–today we are all awaiting those non-locals to come here,” he said.

“Creating division amongst the citizens must be avoided. Those who are in a responsible position, or those who were at some point in time, are expected to follow the dignity of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’,” he said. (ANI)
