In a heartwarming tribute to one of Indian cricket’s modern-day greats, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to name a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after Indian captain Rohit Sharma. The move, approved during MCA’s Annual General Meeting on April 15, celebrates Rohit’s contributions to both Indian and Mumbai cricket, placing him among the legends of the game who have previously been honoured in a similar fashion.
New Pavilion in Rohit Sharma’s Name
As per the MCA’s official statement, the stand named after Rohit Sharma will be the Divesh Pavilion 3. This decision places the Indian skipper alongside other cricket stalwarts such as Sharad Pawar, who will have Grand Stand Level 3 named after him, and the late Ajit Wadekar, whose name will grace the Grand Stand Level 4. The MCA emphasized that these dedications are part of a broader effort to honour individuals who have shaped Mumbai’s rich cricketing culture.
MCA President Ajinkya Naik remarked that the association’s move reflects a deep sense of respect and gratitude towards those who have built Mumbai cricket “brick by brick, run by run.” Rohit’s induction into this illustrious list reflects his stature not just as a player but also as a leader who has left a lasting legacy.
Rohit Sharma’s Lasting Legacy
Rohit Sharma’s cricketing journey is filled with notable milestones. Under his captaincy, India secured its second T20 World Cup title in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, ending an 11-year drought for ICC titles. He also led the Indian team to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, maintaining an unbeaten run until the last match.
His leadership was instrumental during India’s campaign in the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle and even in the subsequent edition where India reached close to another final. Beyond international cricket, Rohit’s success with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, where he has won five titles, adds further weight to his legacy.
Now retired from the T20I format, Rohit continues to play a pivotal role in the Indian Test and ODI sides as an opening batter and captain. With this stand at Wankhede named in his honour, Rohit joins the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant as an immortal part of Mumbai’s cricketing history.
