  • BCCI urges Kohli to reconsider retirement before England tour.

Virat Kohli, one of India’s most successful Test cricketers, is reportedly considering retirement from the longest format of the game, following in the footsteps of Rohit Sharma. The news has left the cricketing world in shock, especially as the BCCI is attempting to persuade Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision ahead of India’s crucial tour of England next month. While Virat Kohli has expressed his desire to move on from Test cricket, the Indian board is pressing him to play on, citing the importance of the upcoming series.

Virat Kohli’s Current Form and Performance in Test Cricket
Virat Kohli, who has been a pillar of Indian cricket for over a decade, has played 123 Tests, scoring 9,230 runs at an impressive average of 46.85. However, in recent years, his form has dipped. In the last five years, he has scored only 1,990 runs in 37 Tests, with just three centuries to his name. His struggles were evident during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, where, despite a solid start, he could not capitalize on his chances. Virat Kohli’s performance in the series was marked by consistent failures to handle deliveries outside the off-stump, a sign that his struggles in the red-ball format continue.

Virat Kohli’s Legacy and Importance in Indian Cricket
While Virat Kohli’s recent Test performances have been below his usual standards, his legacy in the format remains significant. Virat Kohli’s leadership and contribution to Indian Test cricket have been remarkable. His memorable performances in England, particularly in 2018, where he scored 593 runs in five Tests, are still fresh in the minds of fans. However, Virat Kohli himself has hinted that he might be nearing the end of his Test career. In an interview before the 2025 IPL season, he spoke about the mental strain of playing international cricket, particularly in difficult tours like Australia. His reflection on the mental burden suggests he is contemplating life beyond Test cricket.

Though Virat Kohli retired from T20Is after India’s triumph in the 2024 World Cup, his form in the IPL 2025 has been exceptional, scoring 505 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of 143.46. Despite this, his desire to retire from Test cricket remains, and the BCCI is hoping to convince him to stay on, especially with the important England tour approaching. The question now lies in whether Virat Kohli will answer the call of duty one last time or step away from the format that made him a global icon.
