Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta has been nominated as the party’s candidate for the post of Delhi Assembly speaker, party leaders confirmed on Thursday. If elected, Vijender Gupta will preside over the proceedings of the newly constituted eighth Delhi Assembly, where the Bharatiya Janata Party holds a majority with 48 MLAs, while the opposition Aam Aadmi Party has 22 legislators. The assembly speaker is chosen through an election by House members.
Confirming his nomination, Vijender Gupta stated that one of his first priorities would be to present the pending reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General in the House, which were allegedly withheld by the previous Aam Aadmi Party-led government. “I will first of all get the Comptroller and Auditor General reports that were kept pending by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government tabled before the House,” Vijender Gupta said.
Vijender Gupta, who has served three terms as the MLA from Rohini, has been vocal about financial and governance-related issues concerning the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi. Along with other Bharatiya Janata Party legislators, he had previously approached the court, alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party administration was obstructing the presentation of 14 Comptroller and Auditor General reports related to its performance. These reports, which provide a detailed audit of the Delhi government’s expenditures and policies, are crucial for transparency and accountability in governance.
Vijender Gupta has been a prominent figure in Delhi’s political landscape, known for his role as the leader of the opposition during the Aam Aadmi Party’s previous tenure. His nomination as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for the speaker’s post signals the party’s intent to assert control over legislative proceedings in the Delhi Assembly. With a comfortable majority, the Bharatiya Janata Party is well-positioned to elect its nominee to the post, which plays a key role in maintaining order and facilitating discussions in the House.
The election of the assembly speaker is a crucial step in the formation of the new government, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s recent victory in Delhi. The role of the speaker is not only to ensure smooth legislative proceedings but also to act as a neutral authority in maintaining decorum and upholding the constitutional framework. If elected, Vijender Gupta is expected to push for greater scrutiny of the previous government’s financial decisions and ensure that pending reports are discussed transparently.
The developments come as the Bharatiya Janata Party, under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, prepares to steer governance in the national capital. With the legislative framework being set in motion, all eyes are now on the Delhi Assembly’s first session, where the election of the speaker will be one of the key initial proceedings.
