In a reminiscent echo of the infamous ‘Brain Fade’ incident involving Steve Smith in 2017, Mumbai Indians (MI) have found themselves embroiled in a similar controversy during the IPL match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on Thursday.
During a crucial moment in the 15th over of MI’s innings, a contentious wide call by umpire Vineet Kulkarni sparked controversy when MI batter Suryakumar Yadav was seemingly urged to review the decision from the dugout. Video footage capturing head coach Mark Boucher and batter Tim David gesturing to Yadav to review the call has since gone viral, raising questions about external influence on the on-field decision-making process.
Despite initial reluctance, Yadav eventually opted to review the call, leading to the decision being overturned in MI’s favor by third umpire Nitin Menon. This incident has reignited discussions around the role of external interference in on-field decisions and the integrity of the game.
Adding fuel to the fire, PBKS’s stand-in captain Sam Curran was observed disputing the decision, pointing towards the MI dugout, suggesting outside interference in the review process.
This controversial moment was not an isolated incident in the match, as another debatable wide call in the penultimate over further fueled the scrutiny on umpiring decisions.
