  • Spurs star sidelined with blood clot, ending promising NBA season.
  • The 7-foot-3 Frenchman had been making a significant impact in his sophomore NBA season after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out for the remainder of the NBA season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The 21-year-old French sensation, who was averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and a league-best 3.8 blocks per game, received the diagnosis after returning to San Antonio following the NBA All-Star game in San Francisco.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Spurs confirmed Wembanyama’s condition and stated that he is expected to miss the rest of the 2024-25 regular season. “The team will provide updates as appropriate,” the statement read. Despite the setback, the franchise remains optimistic about his full recovery.

The news comes as a significant blow to the Spurs, who were relying on Wembanyama’s presence to push for a potential postseason run. Veteran point guard Chris Paul expressed the team’s disappointment, emphasizing the young star’s importance to both the squad and the league. “It’s tough. More than anything, we know how much he means to our team and how much he loves to play,” Paul said.

Wembanyama’s condition is not unprecedented in the NBA. Former Miami Heat star Chris Bosh was forced into early retirement due to recurring blood clots, while other players like Detroit Pistons’ Ausar Thompson and Toronto Raptors’ Brandon Ingram successfully returned after similar diagnoses. However, Wembanyama’s absence will significantly impact the Spurs, who currently sit 12th in the Western Conference, two spots away from the final play-in berth.

Even with the recent addition of high-scoring guard De’Aaron Fox from Sacramento at the trade deadline, San Antonio faces an uphill battle without their centerpiece. Paul acknowledged that the team must adjust but admitted there is no true replacement for Wembanyama. “You can’t replace Vic. I can’t stand on a guy’s shoulders and block every shot that comes to the rim,” he said, adding that Wembanyama’s presence in the locker room will also be missed.

The 7-foot-3 Frenchman had been making a significant impact in his sophomore NBA season after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. His rise to stardom saw him earn his first All-Star selection this year, further solidifying his reputation as a future face of the league. Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards even acknowledged Wembanyama’s status, saying, “That’s what they’ve got Wemby for,” when asked about potential league icons.

Adding to the Spurs’ challenges, longtime head coach Gregg Popovich suffered a stroke in November, forcing him to take an indefinite leave. Despite these setbacks, Paul insisted that the team remains focused on making the playoffs. “That’s the plan. I know Vic, I know Pop, they wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said.

Wembanyama’s absence will also impact his eligibility for end-of-season awards. He had been on track for defensive player of the year honors, but NBA rules require a minimum number of games played for consideration. His season also included a notable trip home to France, where the Spurs played two games in Paris against the Indiana Pacers.

Before his NBA career, Wembanyama played in the French league and helped France secure a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, losing to the United States in the final. His meteoric rise has positioned him as one of the most exciting prospects in the NBA, and the Spurs will be hoping for a swift and complete recovery for their young star.
