Vicky Kaushal’s latest romantic-comedy, Bad Newz, has made a notable debut at the box office, earning approximately Rs 8.5 crore on its opening day, according to early estimates reported by industry tracker Sacnilk. The film, directed by Anand Tiwari, features an ensemble cast including Triptii Dimri and Ammy Virk and is produced by Anand Tiwari, Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Amritpal Singh Bindra.
The film’s opening day saw a modest Hindi occupancy rate of 22.83 percent, with the highest attendance recorded during the evening shows. As the only comedy film currently showing in theaters, Bad Newz is anticipated to attract a significant family audience and gain momentum over the weekend.
Currently, Bad Newz faces little competition at the box office. Other films in circulation have underperformed, including Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira, which has experienced inconsistent foot traffic, and Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, which is nearing its exit from theaters within a week of its release. Additionally, Kalki 2898 AD is seeing a decline in ticket sales as it enters its third week.
The film marks a significant milestone for Vicky Kaushal, achieving his highest opening day collection to date. His previous record was set with the 2019 military drama Uri – The Surgical Strike, which earned Rs 8.20 crore on its first day and eventually grossed Rs 245.36 crore. Vicky Kaushal’s recent releases include Sam Bahadur (2023), which opened at Rs 5.75 crore, The Great Indian Family (2023) with Rs 1 crore, and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023), which earned Rs 5.49 crore on its release day.
Despite its strong opening, Bad Newz has received mixed reviews from both critics and audiences. The plot of Bad Newz delves into the rare phenomenon of heteropaternal superfecundation, where a woman conceives twins with different biological fathers, adding a unique twist to its storyline.
