Scriptural references vary regarding the exact date for observing Vat Savitri Vrat. While texts such as the Skanda Purana and Bhavishyottara Purana suggest that it should be observed on Jyeshtha Purnima, others like Nirnaya Sindhu advocate for its observance on Jyeshtha Amavasya. Importantly, this vrat is not limited to married women; it can be observed by widows, young girls, elderly women, and women without children, provided it is performed with faith and devotion.

Significance of Worshipping the Banyan Tree

A key ritual in Vat Savitri Vrat is the worship of the Vat Vriksha (banyan tree). In Hindu beliefs, the tree is revered as the symbolic abode of the Holy Trinity — Brahma resides in its roots, Vishnu in its trunk, and Shiva in its branches. The banyan tree symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and spiritual strength. Its worship is believed to fulfill wishes and protect one’s spouse from untimely death.

The vrat derives its name and significance from the legendary tale of Devi Savitri, who, through her unwavering devotion, penance, and resolve, brought her husband Satyavan back to life from the clutches of Yamraj, the god of death. This vrat is thus observed as a mark of commitment and divine love, aimed at securing the long life and fortune of one’s spouse.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 Date and Timing

According to the Hindu calendar, the Amavasya Tithi of Jyeshtha month will begin on Monday, 26 May 2025, at 12:11 PM and will end on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, at 8:31 AM. Considering the sunrise-based observance, the vrat should be observed on 26 May 2025.

Auspicious Timings for Vat Savitri Vrat 2025

To maximize spiritual benefit, devotees can perform the vrat and associated rituals during the following muhurats on 26 May:

Brahma Muhurat: 4:03 AM to 4:44 AM – ideal for meditation and spiritual activities
Amrit Muhurat: 5:25 AM to 7:08 AM – considered extremely favorable for worship
Shubh Muhurat: 8:52 AM to 10:35 AM – suitable for general puja and ritual performance
Abhijit Muhurat: 11:51 AM to 12:46 PM – best for initiating auspicious tasks
Labh Muhurat: 3:45 PM to 5:28 PM – favorable for performing rituals and seeking blessings

Yogas and Nakshatras Enhancing the Auspiciousness

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 falls under highly favorable astrological alignments:

Shobhan Yoga: From the start of the day until 7:02 AM – known for prosperity and well-being
Atiganda Yoga: From 7:02 AM on 26 May to 2:55 AM on 27 May
Sukarma Yoga: Begins after the end of Atiganda Yoga – supports virtuous deeds

Additionally, Bharani Nakshatra will remain in effect until 8:23 AM, after which Krittika Nakshatra will begin. Worship performed under these auspicious alignments is believed to yield enhanced spiritual merit and fulfillment of desires.

Spiritual Belief and Religious Merit

The worship of the banyan tree during Vat Savitri Vrat is rooted in the belief that it protects the devotee’s husband from premature death and grants the boon of long-lasting marital bliss. The site of Satyavan’s revival was beneath a banyan tree, and hence, the ritual carries deep symbolic value. Women tie sacred threads around the tree, offer prayers, and perform circumambulations while chanting devotional hymns.

Vat Savitri Vrat is a celebration of devotion, strength, and the sanctity of marriage, offering spiritual elevation and divine blessings to those who observe it with faith and sincerity.
