Mumbai, March 29, 2026 | Actor Varun Dhawan has shared that his daughter Lara was diagnosed with a rare hip condition shortly after birth, describing it as a challenging period for the family.
In a recent interview, Varun revealed that Lara was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH), a condition in which the hip joint is not properly aligned or is dislocated. If untreated, the condition can lead to complications such as difficulty in walking, uneven leg length, arthritis, or even spinal issues later in life.
Understanding the Condition
DDH occurs when the ball-and-socket joint of the hip does not form correctly. Varun explained that while the condition is often detected and treated early in many Western countries, awareness and access to early screening in India can vary, although skilled medical professionals are available.
Treatment Without Surgery
The actor said that his daughter did not require surgery, which came as a major relief for the family. Doctors were able to correct the hip alignment through a specialised non-surgical procedure.
Following the correction, Lara had to remain in a spica cast—a plaster cast extending from the waist to the leg—for nearly two and a half months. This is a standard treatment approach to ensure the hip remains in the correct position during healing.
A Difficult Phase for the Family
Varun described the period as emotionally and physically demanding, especially given the young age of his daughter. He said it was not easy for a small child to remain in a cast for such an extended duration.
He recalled that after regaining consciousness from anesthesia, Lara initially experienced discomfort, but gradually adapted to the situation over time. The family closely supported her throughout the recovery process.
Recovery and Current Health
According to Varun, Lara has now fully recovered and is in good health, bringing relief to the family after what he termed a “tough phase.”
Personal Life
Varun Dhawan is married to Natasha Dalal. The couple, who were childhood friends, tied the knot on January 24, 2021, after several years of dating. They welcomed their daughter Lara in 2024.
Raising Awareness
By sharing his experience, Varun has drawn attention to DDH, a condition that can be effectively treated if diagnosed early. His account highlights the importance of early screening and timely medical intervention in ensuring healthy development in infants.
The actor’s revelation has resonated with many parents, shedding light on a lesser-known medical condition and the challenges families may face during treatment and recovery.
