Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy made a triumphant return to the national team after almost three years, playing a pivotal role in India’s dominant win over Bangladesh in the first T20I. Varun Chakravarthy, who had been away from the team since his last appearance in 2021, took three crucial wickets, helping India bundle out Bangladesh for just 127 runs. His overspin proved too much for the opposition as he claimed the scalps of Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali, and Rishad Hossain.
Following the match, Varun Chakravarthy opened up about the emotional challenges he faced during his time away from the Indian team. Speaking at the post-match press conference, the 32-year-old spinner admitted that being left out of the squad had a significant impact on his mental well-being. “Whenever a squad was announced, I used to wonder why my name wasn’t there. It was always on my mind, and it affected me emotionally,” Varun Chakravarthy shared, highlighting how difficult the period was for him.
He credited his family for supporting him during the tough times. “My family has seen the worst of my emotions. They have been my constant support throughout this journey,” Varun Chakravarthy said, emphasizing the crucial role they played in keeping him grounded during his absence from the national setup.
However, being dropped from the team eventually became a source of motivation for Varun Chakravarthy. Determined to make a comeback, he focused on domestic competitions, dedicating himself to improving his craft. “I realized I shouldn’t give up. Playing domestic games and treating every tournament as important helped me rediscover my form,” he said.
In the match against Bangladesh, Varun Chakravarthy’s performance was backed by strong camaraderie within the Indian team. He revealed that fellow spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who was left out to accommodate Varun Chakravarthy in the playing XI, constantly supported him throughout the game. “Ravi Bishnoi kept cheering me up and sending me messages during the match. It’s good to have healthy competition within the team as it pushes everyone to perform better,” Varun Chakravarthy added.
India’s dominant display saw them comfortably chase down Bangladesh’s target of 127 in just 11.5 overs, with Hardik Pandya leading the charge, scoring an unbeaten 39 off 16 balls. Varun Chakravarthy’s successful return adds another option to India’s spin attack, and his remarkable comeback has given the team a significant boost as they lead the series 1-0.
For Varun Chakravarthy, the emotional rollercoaster has only made his return more rewarding, as he now looks to cement his place in the team.
