The Vande Bharat Express, India’s semi-high-speed train, achieved a historic milestone on Saturday as it completed its first trial run in Jammu and Kashmir, traversing the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge. The train departed from Katra and arrived at Srinagar’s Nowgam station at 11:30 am before continuing its journey to Budgam station. Designed specifically for the unique climatic conditions of Kashmir, the Vande Bharat train is set to significantly enhance rail connectivity in the region and connect it seamlessly with the rest of India.
The Chenab Bridge, located in the Reasi district, stands as a symbol of engineering marvels. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the bridge soars 359 meters above the Chenab River, making it the world’s highest railway bridge. The structure, constructed with cutting-edge technology, features a single steel arch spanning 467 meters. This trial run marked the first time a passenger train crossed this remarkable feat of infrastructure, signifying a giant leap in connecting the far-flung regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
In addition to the Chenab Bridge, the train also passed through the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. The Anji Khad Bridge is another awe-inspiring structure on the USBRL, standing alongside the Chenab Bridge as one of the world’s two tallest railway bridges. Its single pylon rises 331 meters above the riverbed, with the pylon itself reaching 191 meters above its foundation, while the total bridge length measures 473.25 meters.
The successful trial run of the Vande Bharat train was met with jubilation from onlookers and railway officials alike. A large crowd gathered at Srinagar station to witness the arrival of the train, cheering and chanting slogans as the sleek train pulled in. The train, hailed for its speed, comfort, and modern design, is expected to revolutionize travel in Jammu and Kashmir by reducing travel time and fostering greater connectivity.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate the union territory more closely with the rest of the country and boost economic activity in the region. The completion of this trial run underscores India’s commitment to advancing infrastructure in challenging terrains, setting the stage for enhanced mobility and development in Jammu and Kashmir.
