Arshdeep Bains, hailing from Surrey, Canada, recently fulfilled a lifelong aspiration as he made his National Hockey League (NHL) debut with the Vancouver Canucks, marking a historic moment as only the fourth Punjabi ice hockey player to grace the league’s stage.
In his debut game against the Colorado Avalanche in Denver, the 23-year-old forward garnered 13 minutes of ice time, showcasing his skills with two shots on goal, three hits, and a block. Reflecting on his achievement, Bains expressed gratitude, stating, “For my whole life, I’ve tried to put my foot in the door at every level I’ve been to and it’s no different here. It’s been a heck of a journey.”
A lifelong Canucks fan, Bains cherished the opportunity to represent his hometown team, emphasizing the surreal feeling of stepping onto the ice for the first time. Despite the initial awe, he quickly settled into the game, treating it like any other hockey match.
Bains’s call-up to the Canucks from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Abbotsford, B.C., comes amidst a standout season where he has demonstrated his prowess with nine goals and 39 points in 42 games. His second NHL game against the Seattle Kraken further solidified his presence in the league, underscoring his determination and skill.
Joining the ranks of Robin Bawa, Manny Malhotra, and Jujhar Khaira, Bains contributes to the growing legacy of Punjabi players in the NHL, marking a significant milestone in his career and inspiring future generations of aspiring hockey enthusiasts.
