Survivors of the devastating trekking tragedy in Uttarakhand endured a harrowing 36-hour ordeal, sitting with the bodies of their nine companions, revealed S Srivatsa, Secretary of the Karnataka Mountaineering Association. The tragic incident unfolded amidst adverse weather conditions, leaving a trail of shock and despair.
Recalling the traumatic experience, S Srivatsa described how the trekkers battled heavy winds, zero visibility, and extreme exhaustion. Despite seeking refuge next to a large boulder, the group succumbed to hypothermia and lack of oxygen, with four collapsing initially and five others later.
Amid the chaos, a guide and fellow mountaineers from the lower camp dispatched additional tents and essentials, ultimately aiding the survival of the remaining trekkers. However, the tragedy claimed the lives of nine individuals, including 71-year-old Asha Sudhakar, a seasoned member of the Karnataka Mountaineering Association.
The group, comprising experienced individuals aged 34 to 71, encountered unforeseen challenges due to severe weather conditions. Despite their expertise, the trekkers found themselves ensnared in the grip of a fatal blizzard.
Following the catastrophe, efforts were swiftly mobilized for rescue and assistance. The survivors, though traumatized, expressed gratitude for the government’s support amidst their profound loss. Meanwhile, arrangements were made for the dignified repatriation of the deceased, allowing their families to bid a final farewell.
