In a tragic incident, three US service members lost their lives, and dozens were wounded during an unmanned aerial drone attack on US forces stationed in northeastern Jordan near the Syrian border. The attack occurred on January 28 and has been confirmed by the United States Central Command, which issued a press release stating, “On January 28, three US service members were killed and 25 injured from a one-way attack UAS that impacted at a base in northeast Jordan, near the Syria border.”

This attack adds to a series of strikes and counter-strikes involving the US, its allies, and Yemen’s Houthi rebels, with the Israel-Palestine war as a backdrop. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has created a volatile situation, with multiple parties becoming increasingly involved.

President Biden wasted no time in attributing the attack, squarely pointing fingers at Iran-backed groups. In a statement, he declared, “While we are still gathering the facts of this attack, we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.”

A US official speaking to Reuters revealed the toll, with at least 34 personnel being evaluated for possible traumatic brain injuries. The another official also emphasized, “While we’re still gathering facts, this is most assuredly the work of an Iranian-backed militia group.”

In a press release, while expressing condolences over the significant loss of life of the US personnel, President Biden also concluded his statement with a resolute commitment to combat terrorism. He said, “The three American service members we lost were patriots in the highest sense. And their ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten by our nation. We will carry on their commitment to fight terrorism. And have no doubt — we will hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner our choosing.”

It is pertinent to note that, this attack represents a significant escalation of the already tense situation in the Middle East. The region has been grappling with various conflicts ever since the recent war in Gaza, which erupted after a Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas, launched an attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people on Israeli side and and over 26,000 Palestinians on other.
