US President Joe Biden has condemned political violence following what authorities have described as the second assassination attempt on former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. The incident occurred at Donald Trump’s Florida golf club, where the Secret Service thwarted an apparent attack, leading to the arrest of a suspect identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Joe Biden expressed relief that Donald Trump was unharmed and commended the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies for their swift action. “I am relieved that the former President is unharmed,” Joe Biden said. He reiterated his stance against political violence, stating, “There is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country.”
Joe Biden further revealed that he has been briefed on the ongoing investigation into the incident and assured the public that every possible resource would be made available to ensure Donald Trump’s safety. “I have directed my team to continue to ensure that the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety,” Joe Biden added. He emphasized the need for vigilance in protecting political figures, especially as tensions rise during the election season.
The suspect, Routh, who has been identified as a supporter of Ukraine and an outspoken critic of Donald Trump, was apprehended after fleeing the scene in a vehicle. Authorities discovered an AK-47-style assault rifle and other equipment at the scene. The FBI classified the incident as an “apparent assassination attempt.” Law enforcement officials reported that the Secret Service agents had spotted the gunman near the property line of Donald Trump’s golf course and fired on him before he escaped.
Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump’s political opponent in the 2024 election, also condemned the attack. In her statement, she expressed her relief that Donald Trump was safe and reiterated her opposition to political violence. “I am deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump today. As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence,” Harris said. She called on Americans to ensure that such incidents do not lead to further violence and praised the work of the Secret Service for their vigilance.
This incident follows a previous attempt on Donald Trump’s life two months earlier during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. With the arrest of Routh, law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation into the motives behind the attack and any potential links to prior threats. The swift response from the Secret Service and local authorities has been widely praised, with political figures from both sides emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety and security in the nation’s political landscape.
