US President Joe Biden delivered a message of unity in the wake of an assassination attempt on his rival and predecessor, Donald Trump, urging the nation to de-escalate the heated political atmosphere. US President Joe Biden’s rare Oval Office address on Sunday emphasized the importance of Americans standing together despite political differences, stressing that disagreements should not turn fellow citizens into enemies.
“I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics and to remember, when we disagree, we are not enemies, we are neighbors, we are friends, co-workers, citizens and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together,” US President Joe Biden affirmed.
The incident unfolded at a rally in Pennsylvania where Trump, 78, sustained injuries to his ear amid gunfire. A bystander tragically lost their life in the attack, perpetrated by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a registered Republican who was subsequently shot dead at the scene.
In response to the violence, Trump also advocated for national unity, urging Americans not to let “evil” prevail. He credited divine intervention for preventing a more tragic outcome, as shared on his social media platform.
US President Joe Biden, speaking from behind the Resolute Desk in a televised address, stressed the urgency of calming the nation’s political discourse. “Yesterday’s shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania calls on all of us to take a step back, take stock of where we are, how we go forward from here… Unity is the most elusive goal of all, but nothing is more important than that right now – unity,” he stated.
Acknowledging the responsibility of both political factions to defuse tensions, the 81-year-old Democrat underscored America’s tradition of resolving differences through democratic means.
“We debate and disagree, we compare and contrast… but in America, we resolve our differences at the ballot box,” US President Joe Biden asserted.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden had condemned the assassination attempt online, emphasizing that such violence has no place in American society. He also disclosed having a brief, positive conversation with Trump following the attack, reiterating their shared commitment against acts of political violence.
