The White House announced that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is set to visit India to engage with the newly elected government in New Delhi on shared US-India priorities. This visit comes as Narendra Modi prepares to take oath as Prime Minister for a record third consecutive term.
President Joe Biden congratulated Modi on his re-election during a phone call on Wednesday, emphasizing the historic victory of the National Democratic Alliance in India’s general election. The call also highlighted the participation of around 650 million Indian citizens in the electoral process.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and advancing their shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
While the dates of Jake Sullivan’s visit to India have not been disclosed, it is expected to occur shortly after Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, June 8.
Senator Ben Cardin, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also extended congratulations to the Indian electorate for their active participation in the elections despite challenging conditions.
President Biden’s acknowledgment of the strong friendship between the US and India was reciprocated by Modi, who expressed gratitude for the call from his “friend” on social media platforms.
