The United States military has reported the successful interception and destruction of numerous drones and ballistic missiles launched from Iran and Yemen towards Israel. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), over 80 one-way attack drones were neutralized, including seven unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted on the ground prior to launch.
CENTCOM condemned Iran’s actions as “unprecedented, malign, and reckless,” emphasizing the threat posed to regional stability and the safety of US and coalition forces. The military command reiterated its commitment to supporting Israel’s defense against such dangerous provocations, reaffirming collaboration with regional partners to bolster security measures.
The announcement follows Iran’s first-ever attack on Israeli territory, reportedly in retaliation for an alleged Israeli assault on its embassy in Syria. Despite the large-scale assault involving more than 300 drones and missiles, Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, along with assistance from the US and its allies, managed to intercept the majority of the incoming threats, resulting in minimal damage.
US President Joe Biden commended the skill and effectiveness of US forces in assisting Israel’s defense efforts, describing their support as “ironclad.” However, he emphasized that the US would not participate in any retaliatory actions undertaken by the Israeli government against Iran.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin affirmed that US forces remain vigilant in protecting troops and partners in the region, pledging further support for Israel’s defense and the promotion of regional stability.
The escalating tensions between Israel and Iran have raised concerns throughout the Middle East and beyond, prompting calls for restraint from neighboring countries and major global powers. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of the region being on “the brink” of a devastating conflict during a UN Security Council meeting convened in response to the recent hostilities. Guterres urged all parties to prioritize de-escalation and diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
