Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to a joint session of the US Congress on Wednesday has ignited controversy and division among lawmakers and the American public. During Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech, Representative Rashida Tlaib, the only Palestinian-American in Congress, held up a sign labeling Netanyahu a “war criminal” and accusing him of “genocide.” Tlaib, a staunch critic of Israel’s policies in Gaza, was accompanied by Hani Almadhoun, a Palestinian who has lost over 150 family members in the ongoing conflict.
Almadhoun, who was invited by Tlaib, has been vocal about the devastating impact of the conflict on his family and community. Tlaib highlighted Almadhoun’s efforts to provide aid amid the crisis, noting in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Almadhoun and his family started a soup kitchen to assist starving neighbors after witnessing severe hardships.
Outside the Capitol, thousands of protesters gathered to voice their opposition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit, with some being restrained by police using pepper spray. Inside the House of Representatives, six protesters were arrested before Netanyahu began his speech. While some lawmakers offered Netanyahu a standing ovation, others chose to remain absent, reflecting the deep divisions within the US Congress and among the American public regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit occurs amid increasing concerns about the humanitarian impact of Israel’s nine-month ground invasion in Gaza, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties. During his address, Netanyahu emphasized that only military pressure could free hostages and defeat Hamas, which launched a surprise attack on October 7 that killed 1,197 people, mostly civilians. He expressed confidence in the efforts to secure the release of 114 hostages still held in Gaza, where Israel’s retaliatory campaign has reportedly killed at least 39,145 people, predominantly civilians.
In his speech, Netanyahu also called for a global coalition against Iran, accusing it of supporting anti-Israel protests, and criticized ceasefire demonstrators. He praised President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump for their efforts towards Middle East peace, while condemning those who oppose Israel’s actions.
