The United States has cautioned against business dealings with Iran following India’s signing of a 10-year deal to operate the Chabahar Port. In response to the agreement, the US State Department emphasized that sanctions on Iran remain enforced.
Vedant Patel, deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, stated that while the US is aware of the India-Iran deal, sanctions on Iran persist and will be enforced. He reiterated the potential risks for entities engaging in business with Iran.
The contract, signed by India Ports Global Ltd and Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organisation, marks India’s first management of an overseas port. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the Chabahar Port for enhancing connectivity, particularly with Central Asia.
The warning from the US comes in the wake of recent sanctions imposed on entities involved in arms proliferation, including some from China and India. Concerns over the potential impact of sanctions on Indian firms engaging with Iran have been raised, underscoring the complexities of international business relations amidst geopolitical tensions.
