The White House has firmly rejected allegations suggesting that the United States government played a role in the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh, which led to the resignation and departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Addressing the media on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre labeled the claims as “false” and “not true,” emphasizing that the US had no involvement in the events unfolding in Bangladesh.

Jean-Pierre’s comments came in response to reports alleging that Sheikh Hasina had claimed her resignation was linked to US demands. According to these reports, Hasina purportedly suggested that her continued tenure as Prime Minister was contingent upon ceding sovereignty over Saint Martin’s Island and permitting increased US influence in the Bay of Bengal. However, Sajeeb Wazed, Sheikh Hasina’s son, has dismissed these claims as entirely fabricated. In a statement posted on X, Wazed confirmed that his mother did not make any such statements before or after leaving Dhaka.
Jean-Pierre reiterated the stance of the US government, stating that the future of Bangladesh’s leadership should be determined solely by its people. “Electing their leader is a choice for and by the Bangladeshi people. We believe that the Bangladeshi people should determine the future of their government,” she asserted.
In the wake of these political developments, Bangladesh has seen the installation of an interim government led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus. This government’s primary task is to oversee the forthcoming elections in the country. The political transition follows a period of intense unrest, which was ignited by student protests against a quota system for government jobs. These protests rapidly evolved into a broader movement demanding Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
While the US government has denied any involvement in the political crisis, Jean-Pierre emphasized that the US would continue to monitor the situation in Bangladesh. She noted President Joe Biden’s commitment to human rights, stating, “The president has been very consistent in speaking loud and clear on human rights issues, both publicly and privately.”
The situation in Bangladesh has also prompted protests among Hindu-Americans in various US cities, drawing attention to alleged human rights abuses against Hindu minorities in the country. At a recent demonstration in Atlanta, Congressman Shawn Still urged the US State Department to take decisive measures to protect the rights and well-being of minority communities in Bangladesh.
The White House has reaffirmed its position of non-interference while maintaining a focus on monitoring the ongoing situation and addressing human rights concerns.
