Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to embark on an official visit to Washington from August 23 to 26, 2024, aimed at strengthening defence ties between India and the United States. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will meet with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin to discuss areas of strategic interest and enhance defence cooperation.
In a statement on X, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed anticipation for the visit, highlighting the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership shared by India and the US. He noted, “Leaving for Washington. India and the United States share a Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Looking forward to meet my friend @SecDef Austin. Will discuss areas of strategic interests, while seeking to strengthen defence cooperation.”
The visit underscores the growing momentum in India-US relations, with both nations working to deepen their strategic and defence engagements. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s schedule includes a high-level roundtable meeting with the US defence industry, focusing on ongoing and future defence collaborations. He is also expected to engage with the Indian community during his stay.
The Ministry of Defence further emphasized the importance of the visit, noting that Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s interactions are intended to broaden and deepen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The engagement with US officials is anticipated to bolster bilateral defence ties and collaborative efforts in various domains.
This visit follows recent high-level meetings between Indian and US officials. On August 17, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma in Delhi. They discussed the ongoing momentum in bilateral relations and exchanged views on regional and global issues. Verma, who previously served as the US Ambassador to India, is a key figure in the diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
Jaishankar had also met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on July 29 in Tokyo during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting. They had a wide-ranging discussion on regional and global issues, reflecting the steady progress in their bilateral agenda.
