Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commenced a crucial visit to the United States to unveil Kyiv’s latest plan aimed at resolving the prolonged war with Russian forces, which has persisted for over two and a half years. This visit is particularly significant as Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to present his proposals to President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former President Donald Trump, who is also a presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
During his visit, Volodymyr Zelenskyy will participate in the annual United Nations meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, where he intends to garner support for what he calls a “victory plan” to achieve “a shared victory for a truly just peace.” He plans to present the comprehensive details of his peace proposals to Biden on Thursday, followed by discussions with Harris. Although a meeting with Trump is anticipated for Thursday or Friday, a specific date has yet to be confirmed.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s trip comes after a summer marked by significant fighting, with Russian forces making advances in eastern Ukraine while Ukraine has managed to regain control over parts of the Kursk region. In a display of gratitude and solidarity, Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an unannounced visit to a munitions plant in Pennsylvania that manufactures crucial 155-millimeter artillery shells. Expressing his appreciation to the workers, he highlighted the importance of such facilities in reinforcing the democratic efforts against tyranny.
While specific details of the peace proposals remain undisclosed, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Biden would be the first foreign leader to review the plan in its entirety, which is expected to be presented to leaders of partner countries thereafter. He indicated that the complete plan would be finalized by early November and would propose “quick and concrete steps” for Ukraine’s strategic allies.
Among these proposals is a focus on bolstering Ukraine’s military capabilities and establishing a definitive role for Ukraine within the global security framework. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been advocating for the use of Western-supplied long-range weapons to target military installations deep within Russia, although Biden has refrained from endorsing this approach due to concerns that it may escalate tensions with Moscow.
This visit coincides with preparations for a new military aid package from the US, amounting to $375 million, which will include patrol boats and additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS), alongside various artillery munitions. As Volodymyr Zelenskyy seeks to strengthen support for Ukraine, his meetings with US leaders will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the ongoing conflict.
