Ukraine announced on Thursday the seizure of a foreign cargo ship and the detention of its captain, accusing them of illegally exporting Ukrainian grain from the annexed Crimean peninsula. The move comes amid escalating tensions over Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian agricultural territories since early 2022, which Kyiv alleges has led to illicit harvesting and export of grain to international markets.
The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s office disclosed that the vessel was apprehended in the southern Odesa region after it reportedly transported agricultural products via Sevastopol, a key Russian naval hub in Crimea. The operation was part of Ukraine’s efforts to counter what it terms as unlawful activities stemming from Russian-controlled territories.
Security Services of Ukraine (SBU) issued a statement confirming the detention of the ship’s captain, charging him with violations related to entering occupied territories. The SBU also accused the vessel, identified as Usko Mfu under the Cameroonian flag, of “looting” over 3,000 tonnes of grain destined for a Turkish company during its unauthorized stopovers in Sevastopol.
Prosecutors emphasized that the vessel had disabled its Automatic Identification System (AIS) upon entering Sevastopol, contravening maritime safety regulations. The ship was seized upon its return to the Ukrainian port of Reni, where authorities uncovered documents allegedly issued by Sevastopol port authorities.
This incident marks a significant escalation, as Ukraine issues warrants for the seizure of 21 more cargo ships suspected of docking in Ukrainian ports under Russian control. Igor Ponochovny of Ukraine’s prosecutor’s office described the seizure as a message to nations facilitating Russian circumvention of international sanctions.
The European Union recently imposed stringent tariffs on grain imports from Russia to curb revenue flows that sustain Moscow’s military actions in Ukraine. Ukrainian officials further reported Russian attacks on agricultural lands and infrastructure in the Kherson region, intensifying tensions over territorial claims and economic exploitation.
The seizure underscores Ukraine’s resolve to assert control over its territorial integrity and confront international complicity in what it terms as illicit economic activities benefiting Russia.
