A female prison officer in the UK faces charges after a video allegedly showing her engaged in a sexual act with an inmate at HMP Wandsworth, a prison in southwest London, has surfaced on social media. Identified as Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, from Fulham, west London, she is accused of misconduct in public office and is scheduled to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court today.
The Metropolitan Police initiated an investigation following the discovery of the video on Friday, purportedly filmed within the prison premises. Initial reports suggest the officer was seen in full uniform before the incident unfolded.
HMP Wandsworth, established in 1851, faces significant challenges including severe overcrowding and deteriorating conditions. Recent inspections have highlighted issues such as widespread violence, pest infestations, and acute staffing shortages. The prison, originally designed for a much smaller capacity, currently houses over 1,500 inmates, operating at 163% of its intended capacity.
Calls for urgent reform at HMP Wandsworth have intensified. In May, Chief Inspector of Prisons Charlie Taylor issued an “urgent notification” to Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, underscoring the critical state of the prison and the pressing need for immediate improvements. Taylor’s report described chaotic conditions within the prison wings and noted serious deficiencies in prisoner management by staff. This scrutiny ultimately led to the resignation of the prison’s governor, Katie Price, amid ongoing inspections.
A spokesperson from Scotland Yard confirmed the ongoing investigation, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards staff corruption. The Prison Service has referred the former officer involved in the video to the police and refrained from further comments pending the investigation’s progress.
