UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has embarked on a pivotal two-day visit to India, marking the first high-level engagement between the two nations since Keir Starmer’s Labour government took office. The visit is aimed at strengthening the partnership between the UK and India, with a particular emphasis on advancing economic ties and global security.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy’s visit underscores the UK government’s commitment to resetting its relationship with the Global South, a strategic move to enhance Britain’s security and economic prosperity. In his opening remarks, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted India’s growing global influence, stating, “India is the emerging superpower of the 21st century, the largest country in the world with 1.4 billion people and one of the fastest growing economies. Our Free Trade Agreement negotiations are the floor, not the ceiling of our ambitions to unlock our shared potential and deliver growth.”
During his stay, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy will engage in discussions with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about the long-awaited India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This agreement represents a significant opportunity for both countries to foster economic growth and collaboration, with a focus on shared interests such as green technology, economic security, and global stability.
In addition to his diplomatic meetings, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy will hold discussions with climate and business leaders. A key component of his agenda is to galvanize support for accelerated climate action. The UK Foreign Secretary aims to drive forward the clean energy transition in partnership with India, exploring avenues for British and Indian businesses to collaborate on climate resilience and clean power access.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy will also emphasize the significance of the ‘Living Bridge’—the 1.7 million individuals of Indian heritage who contribute significantly to British life. He plans to discuss how the UK and India can continue to work together on cutting-edge science and innovation, boosting trade, and improving livelihoods in both nations.
Following his visit to India, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy is scheduled to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Laos, where he will promote UK economic partnerships and unveil new initiatives focused on climate and health cooperation.
