William Nichols, manager of the Foreign National Access Program (FNAP) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory, has been selected as the DOE Office of Science 2024 Outstanding Security Professional of the Year.
The award recognizes federal and contractor employees who surpass expectations in their contribution to the DOE security community.

Nichols has shown exceptional leadership and dedication in FNAP and across the DOE complex. As Argonne’s FNAP authority, he is widely regarded as a subject matter expert and a trusted resource for safeguards and security, earning strong performance reviews and one of the lab’s highest honors, the Impact Argonne Award. Nichols leads the complexwide FNAP Subject Matter Expert Working Group, fostering collaboration and driving improvements that extend beyond his formal responsibilities. He has also played a critical role in DOE reviews of the Foreign Access Central Tracking System software, coordinating input from labs nationwide and delivering high-quality results on tight timelines. Nichols’ diligence has been vital in responding to high-priority Congressional data requests and advancing research security efforts through cross-lab coordination. Known for his initiative and customer-focused mindset, he has introduced innovative monitoring, validation and outreach efforts that strengthen compliance, improve communication and support Argonne’s mission.
