The winter session of Parliament is ongoing, and during this session, a special discussion on the Constitution has been scheduled in both houses of Parliament. The debate in the Lok Sabha will take place on December 13 and 14, while the Rajya Sabha will hold its discussion on December 16 and 17. In this regard, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress issued a three-line whip to their Lok Sabha MPs on Thursday, directing them to be present in the house.
The whip issued by the BJP clearly states that there will be discussions on some important legislative matters in the Lok Sabha on Friday and Saturday, i.e., December 13 and 14, 2024. The whip requests all MPs to be present in the house on both days. Similarly, Congress issued a similar whip directing its MPs to remain present during the debate on the Constitution.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in this regard. In the letter, he requested a special debate in both houses of Parliament on the historic occasion of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly. Rahul Gandhi stated that this historical occasion would provide all MPs an important opportunity to collectively reflect on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy and the core values of the Constitution. He also mentioned previous historic discussions, including the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar in 2015, the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement on August 9, 2017, and the 75th anniversary of India’s independence in 2022.
During this session of the debate on the Constitution, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond on December 14 in the Lok Sabha. In the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate the discussion on December 16. This debate is not only an opportunity to understand the spirit and importance of the Constitution, but it will also provide various political parties with a platform to share their ideologies.
The effort to discuss Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s legacy and give a new direction to the 75th anniversary of India’s Constitution has made this session of Parliament special.
