  • Manufacturing iPhones in USA could raise cost to $3,500.
  • Apple relies on China’s skilled labor and vast infrastructure.

US President Donald Trump’s stance on China has often been labeled as both patriotic and contradictory. His “Make America Great Again” campaign and policies such as imposing tariffs on China to protect American manufacturing reflect his vision. However, one of his more ambitious ideas is the notion that Apple, the tech giant behind the iPhone, can manufacture its products in the United States instead of China.

This wishful thinking has been met with skepticism from Apple executives and industry analysts alike, who believe that even if it were possible, it would come at an extraordinarily high cost.

Trump’s Vision for ‘Made-in-US’ iPhones

Amid the ongoing trade war with China, Trump has continued to advocate for the production of iPhones in the United States. On April 8, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that Trump believes the US has the labor, workforce, and resources to manufacture iPhones. She even pointed to Apple’s recent $500 billion investment as evidence that the company could move production to the US.

Trump further doubled down on this idea, posting on his Truth Social network, “This is a great time to move your company into the US, like Apple, and so many others, in record numbers, are doing.”

While Trump and his administration continue to promote this vision, Apple’s manufacturing hub remains firmly in China, with additional production in Vietnam and India. According to estimates, around 90% of iPhones are assembled in China.

Apple’s Response to the Made-in-US Idea

Despite Trump’s aspirations, Apple has consistently dismissed the idea of manufacturing iPhones in the US. Even Steve Jobs, the late founder of Apple, voiced concerns as early as 2010, explaining that the US lacked the trained engineers necessary to support such large-scale manufacturing. Jobs mentioned that Apple had over 700,000 factory workers in China, supported by around 30,000 engineers, a workforce combination that simply isn’t available in the US.

In 2017, Tim Cook, Apple’s current CEO, also rejected the notion. Cook explained that China’s advantage wasn’t cheap labor, but the high level of skilled labor available for complex manufacturing tasks. The precision required to make iPhones, combined with the specialized tooling skills in China, is something that the US has yet to replicate on the same scale.

The Challenges of Manufacturing iPhones in the US

Other experts have pointed out the logistical and financial obstacles to moving iPhone production to the US. Apple’s factories in Asia aren’t just assembly lines; they’re fully integrated communities with hundreds of thousands of workers, schools, gyms, medical facilities, and dormitories. These factories, such as the massive one in Zhengzhou, China, are often referred to as “iPhone City.”

“Which city in America would stop everything and build just iPhones?” asks Matthew Moore, a former Apple manufacturing engineer. The scale of operations in China is vast, and replicating that in the US would require a monumental effort, not only in terms of facilities but also in workforce mobilization.

Additionally, the US is facing a severe labor shortage, particularly in manufacturing. Many analysts argue that the US has lost its ability to manufacture at the scale and efficiency that countries like China can achieve.

The High Costs of Manufacturing iPhones in the US

Even if Apple did manage to overcome these massive challenges, the cost of manufacturing iPhones in the US would be astronomically high. Financial experts suggest that iPhones could cost up to $3,500 (Rs 3.01 lakh) if manufactured in the US, compared to the current price of around $1,000 (Rs 86,081).

Dan Ives, a global head of technology research at Wedbush Securities, mentioned that replicating China’s complex supply chain in the US would not only drive up costs significantly but also disrupt the efficient production network that Apple currently benefits from.

Furthermore, an analysis by Rosenblatt Securities warned that tariffs alone could push the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB, currently priced at $1,599, to nearly $2,300. This is before considering the full escalation of the US-China trade war.

China’s Resilience and the Future of iPhone Production

While Trump’s push for ‘Made-in-US’ iPhones continues, analysts believe that the reality of such a shift is highly unlikely. Apple has invested heavily in China, not only because of the labor cost advantages but also due to the highly specialized workforce that makes it possible to produce advanced electronics like the iPhone at scale.

Moreover, Apple’s ability to move its manufacturing to the US would require a major restructuring of its global supply chain, an undertaking that would be costly and time-consuming. The political pressure in the US, alongside the fluctuations in Trump’s tariff policies, only adds complexity to the situation.

A Complex and Costly Vision

In conclusion, Trump’s vision of iPhones being made in the US is likely to remain a distant dream. While the US could potentially manufacture smartphones like Apple’s flagship product, the costs would be prohibitive, and the necessary workforce and infrastructure are simply not available at the scale required. Even if Apple attempted to bring production back to the US, it would face significant financial and logistical hurdles that would raise prices and disrupt the global supply chain.

The trade war between the US and China, fueled by tariffs and political motivations, has already begun to create long-lasting economic consequences. But for now, it seems clear that iPhones will continue to be made in China, and the dream of ‘Made-in-US’ iPhones will remain just that — a dream.
