Donald Trump Demands Netflix Fire Susan Rice, Hints at Consequences as Streaming Giant Seeks Federal Approval for Warner Bros Acquisition

US President Donald Trump has publicly warned Netflix that it will “pay the consequences” if it does not remove Susan Rice from its board of directors. The remarks, posted on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, mark the latest escalation in tensions between the White House and prominent corporate and media figures.

Susan Rice, who has served on Netflix’s board since 2018, previously held senior diplomatic and national security roles. She was US Ambassador to the United Nations and later served as National Security Advisor during the administration of Barack Obama. She also held a senior domestic policy advisory role during the presidency of Joe Biden.

The controversy erupted after Rice appeared on the podcast “Stay Tuned with Preet,” hosted by former federal prosecutor Preet Bharara. During the interview, Rice criticized corporations that, in her view, are aligning themselves too closely with Trump. She suggested that companies making political concessions could face repercussions if Democrats return to power in future elections.

Rice argued that businesses that “take a knee” to political pressure might be “held accountable” when the political balance shifts. Her comments appeared to reference corporate decisions involving executive hires, policy changes, and compliance choices that critics say are influenced by federal pressure.

In response, Trump posted a sharply worded message calling Rice “racist” and “Trump deranged,” demanding that Netflix fire her “immediately.” He questioned her qualifications and compensation, asserting that she lacked talent and was merely a political operative. Although Trump did not outline specific measures, his warning that Netflix would “pay the consequences” has fueled speculation about possible regulatory implications.

The timing of Trump’s comments is significant. Netflix is reportedly pursuing a major acquisition involving Warner Bros., a move that would require approval from federal regulators. Such a merger could face scrutiny under antitrust laws, particularly given the growing consolidation within the streaming and entertainment industries.

Industry observers note that presidential commentary on pending regulatory reviews is highly unusual and potentially influential. While regulatory agencies are designed to operate independently, political rhetoric can shape public perception and increase scrutiny of high-profile transactions.

Trump’s post also referenced claims by conservative activist Laura Loomer, who alleged that a Netflix-Warner Bros combination could create a streaming monopoly. Loomer further suggested that the Higher Ground Productions deal with Netflix might indirectly benefit the Obamas if consolidation strengthens the platform’s market position.

Higher Ground Productions, founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, signed a multi-year content agreement with Netflix to produce documentaries and scripted programming. While such partnerships are common in the entertainment industry, political opponents have framed the arrangement as evidence of ideological alignment between Netflix leadership and Democratic figures.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos reportedly met with Trump before the Warner Bros deal was publicly announced. Trump later described Netflix as a “great company” but acknowledged concerns about market concentration. His latest remarks appear to signal a harder stance amid ongoing political tensions.

This episode is part of a broader pattern of Trump publicly criticizing corporate leaders and executives whom he perceives as politically opposed to him. Last year, he called on Microsoft to dismiss its president of global affairs, Lisa Monaco, following similar criticism amplified by Loomer. Monaco remains in her position.

The clash highlights the increasingly blurred lines between politics, media, and corporate governance. Board members of publicly traded companies often include former government officials, diplomats, and policymakers whose expertise in regulatory affairs and global relations is considered valuable. However, in a polarized political climate, such affiliations can become flashpoints.

Legal experts point out that federal regulators reviewing mergers typically focus on competition, consumer impact, and market structure rather than the political affiliations of board members. Nevertheless, public pressure campaigns can complicate corporate strategies and affect shareholder confidence.

Netflix has not issued a formal response to Trump’s latest post. Corporate governance principles generally place hiring and board appointment decisions in the hands of shareholders and directors rather than political authorities. Any move to remove a board member under political pressure would likely generate controversy in both legal and financial circles.

The streaming industry itself is undergoing rapid consolidation as companies compete for subscribers in a saturated market. Large-scale mergers can reshape content distribution, pricing models, and global licensing arrangements. Regulators may examine whether a combined Netflix-Warner Bros entity could limit competition or reduce consumer choice.

Beyond the immediate corporate implications, the episode underscores the broader debate about corporate political engagement. Some companies have taken public positions on social issues, voting laws, climate change, and diversity initiatives. Others have sought to maintain neutrality. In both cases, they often face backlash from one political faction or another.

Rice’s comments on the podcast reflected a warning about what she sees as short-term corporate calculations driven by political expediency. Trump’s response, in turn, framed her statements as partisan activism inappropriate for a corporate board member.

As federal regulators review major media deals and as political campaigns intensify, similar confrontations may become more common. The intersection of antitrust policy, media consolidation, and political influence remains a complex and evolving landscape.

For now, attention is focused on whether Netflix will address Trump’s demand or maintain silence. The outcome could influence not only the company’s governance dynamics but also the broader relationship between political leadership and corporate America.
