Aaditya Adlakha, a 26-year-old Indian Ph.D. student specializing in molecular and developmental biology at the University of Cincinnati Medical School, was fatally shot in Ohio. Aaditya Adlakha succumbed to his injuries at the UC Medical Center on November 11, two days after he was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds inside a crashed vehicle.
The incident, described as “sudden, tragic, and senseless” by the medical school, has left the community in shock. The institution issued a heartfelt statement expressing condolences to Aaditya’s family and friends. Andrew Filak, the Senior Vice President of Health Affairs and Dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, remembered Aaditya as “much-loved, exceedingly kind and humorous, intelligent and sharp, whose research was described as novel and transformative.”
The tragic event unfolded on November 9 when the police received reports of gunshots in the vicinity around 6:20 am. The alert came from ShotSpotter, a gunfire locator service, and concerned motorists who had spotted a vehicle riddled with bullet holes and an injured individual inside.
Aaditya Adlakha was found inside the vehicle, which bore at least three visible bullet holes on the driver’s side window. He was immediately rushed to the hospital and remained in critical condition until he passed away on November 11.
Adlakha was a fourth-year doctoral student, completing his research on understanding the role of neuroimmune communication in pain and inflammation associated with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. He had previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Zoology from Ramjas College at the University of Delhi and a master’s degree in Physiology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, both located in New Delhi. He had traveled from northern India to Cincinnati to further his education in the field of medicine.
The University of Cincinnati, in its official statement released has extended support and counseling to those affected by the loss.
“As a college and as Aaditya’s academic home, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and to those who knew him as a friend and colleague,” expressed the medical school in its official statement.
As of now, no suspects have been arrested or identified in connection with the tragic shooting, which remains under active investigation.
