In a heartbreaking turn of events amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza City, the lifeless body of a six-year-old girl, Hind Rajab, was discovered along with several of her relatives and two paramedics who attempted to save her, further escalating tensions in the region.
Hind Rajab had gone missing in Gaza City last month while fleeing the area with her aunt, uncle, and three cousins. Their journey took a tragic turn when the car they were traveling in encountered Israeli tanks and came under fire, resulting in devastating consequences.
Audio recordings of calls between Hind and emergency operators revealed the harrowing ordeal the young girl faced. As the only survivor amidst the carnage, Hind pleaded for rescue while hiding among the bodies of her relatives. Tragically, her pleas were silenced when the phone line abruptly went dead amid the sound of gunfire.
Paramedics from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) managed to reach the area on Saturday after it was finally accessible following intense combat. What they found was a scene of unimaginable horror – the black Kia car Hind had been traveling in lay wrecked, with bullet-riddled bodies inside, including Hind’s.
Additionally, the remnants of an ambulance, destroyed by Israeli forces, lay nearby, claiming the lives of paramedics Yusuf al-Zeino and Ahmed al-Madhoun in the process. The PRCS accused Israel of deliberately targeting the ambulance despite prior coordination for its safe arrival to rescue Hind.
“The [Israeli] occupation deliberately targeted the Red Crescent crew despite obtaining prior coordination to allow the ambulance to arrive at the scene to rescue the child Hind,” the PRCS statement read.
The PRCS revealed that it took several hours to coordinate access with the Israeli army to send paramedics to Hind, highlighting the challenges faced in providing humanitarian assistance amid the conflict.
