Today in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district, a tragic accident claimed the lives of at least 18 individuals and left 19 others injured when a double-decker bus collided with a milk tanker on the Lucknow-Agra expressway. Among the deceased were three women and one child, as confirmed by local authorities.
The bus, en route from Sitamarhi, Bihar, to Delhi, crashed into the tanker in the early hours of the morning, resulting in a devastating impact that ejected passengers from the vehicle. Images from the scene depicted a grim aftermath with scattered bodies, twisted wreckage, shattered glass, and personal belongings strewn across the area.
Gaurang Rathi, District Magistrate of Unnao, reported the incident stating, “At approximately 5:15 am, a private bus from Motihari collided with a milk tanker. Eighteen individuals lost their lives, and 19 others sustained injuries.”
Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals where they are receiving medical care. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and instructed officials to ensure that all injured receive adequate treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for the injured, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting those affected by the accident.
President Droupadi Murmu also offered condolences, expressing profound sadness over the sudden loss of lives and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured individuals.
The accident underscores the importance of road safety measures and emergency response protocols on major highways, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
