In the past, disaster movies were famous for their big action and destruction scenes, often caused by nature. Nowadays, superhero and Transformers films are more popular, but people still enjoy disaster movies. A recent survey on Letterboxd listed the top 10 disaster movies, including classics like Deep Impact and surprising choices. These films show all kinds of disasters, from world-ending events to volcanic eruptions, and they remind us that things could always be worse when we watch them on a gloomy day.

1. Titanic (1997)

Titanic is a famous and emotional movie that tells a love story on a doomed ship. Jack, a struggling artist, falls in love with Rose, a wealthy girl, as they sail on the Titanic. The movie is also about the ship hitting an iceberg, causing chaos and danger. Jack and Rose must fight to survive and stay together.

2. Twister (1996)

“Twister” is a movie about storm chasers in Oklahoma facing dangerous tornadoes. The leader, Jo, must deal with the tornadoes and her ex-husband Bill. The film focuses on thrilling special effects as tornadoes destroy houses and create chaos, making it an exciting storm movie.

3. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

“The Day After Tomorrow” is a movie about natural disasters causing a new Ice Age. Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal play father and son. When no one listens to Jack, a climate scientist, he tries to save his son Sam during the disasters. Even though it’s an old movie, it’s still important because it talks about global warming. Some experts say it has some wrong science, but it’s a movie that makes you think.

4. Dante’s Peak (1997)

“Dante’s Peak” is a movie where Pierce Brosnan, playing a volcanologist, tries to save a town from an erupting volcano. Linda Hamilton is the town’s mayor. The movie has some bad dialogue and characters, but the volcano scenes are exciting. That’s why it has a cult following.

5. Contagion (2011)

“Contagion” is a scary movie about a highly contagious virus that spreads worldwide, causing many deaths. Scientists work hard to find a cure. It has famous actors like Matt Damon and Kate Winslet. Even though it came out before COVID-19, it feels similar to real-life events during the pandemic, which makes it even scarier.

6. Deepwater Horizon (2016)

“Deepwater Horizon” is a movie based on a real event from 2010. It tells the story of an oil rig that explodes, putting the crew in danger. A technician named Michael (played by Mark Wahlberg) leads the effort to keep everyone safe. The film is mostly accurate but takes some creative liberties. It didn’t do well at the box office but is considered one of the best disaster movies based on a real disaster.

7. 2012 (2009)

2012 Trailer #2 - YouTube

“2012” is a disaster movie inspired by the false belief that the world would end in 2012. It follows Jackson Curtis, played by John Cusack, as he tries to save his family from various deadly disasters like earthquakes and floods. While it’s not the best in its genre, it’s still enjoyable, featuring a likable lead and a talented cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Danny Glover, and Woody Harrelson.

8. San Andreas (2015)

In “San Andreas,” a series of earthquakes hits the West Coast of the United States, causing chaos. Pilot Ray and his estranged wife Emma must come together to rescue their daughter. The movie is filled with action and destruction, making it a fun disaster film. There’s talk of a sequel, but it hasn’t been made yet.

9. Deep Impact (1998)

Scientists discover a dangerous comet heading for Earth, causing panic. The government tries to save people, but the comet threatens humanity. Deep Impact, released the same summer as Armageddon, is a scientifically accurate disaster movie with some melodrama but still enjoyable for fans.

10. Volcano (1997)

Volcano Review | Movie - Empire

An earthquake in Los Angeles uncovers a hidden volcano that erupts, causing chaos. A seismologist and experts must save the city. “Volcano” follows typical disaster movie clichés but offers some excitement. The lava effects aren’t great today, but the concept of a volcano in Los Angeles is intriguing.
