  • Surge in dumbphone sales amid rising mental health concerns.

In an age where smartphones dominate our daily lives, a surprising trend is emerging among Generation Z—they are turning back the clock to embrace simpler mobile devices, known as “dumbphones.” These basic phones, reminiscent of early 2000s technology, primarily allow for calling and texting, but some newer models also include features like GPS and hotspot capabilities.

The shift towards these simpler devices comes as concerns over mental health and screen time grow. Studies suggest that Gen Z spends an average of 7.2 hours per day on screens, over an hour more than Generation X. This excessive screen time is linked to various health issues, including depression and obesity, particularly troubling for young people and children.

In response to these concerns, there has been a noticeable increase in the demand for dumbphones. Brands like Light Phone and dumbwireless have reported significant spikes in sales, particularly from younger consumers. Similarly, HMD, the company behind Nokia, has seen its sales of flip phones double from 2022 to 2023, with expectations for even higher sales this year.

The “Boring Phone,” a product marketed as a less distracting alternative, mirrors this cultural shift. This return to simpler technology suggests that if Gen Z continues embracing ’90s-style tech, they might significantly influence how tech companies design and market their products in the future. However, the popularity of such marketing strategies can be fleeting, signaling not only the adoption of a trend but potentially its eventual decline.

Now, many people wonder what alternatives to phones are available since they are so addictive. The answer is simple: “Books.” Reading books not only makes you more knowledgeable and helps you become a smarter, more respectful person but also helps reduce screen time, which is a big deal these days.

But what if you find books boring? Try starting with illustrated books that have less text and more pictures and illustrations to help you understand the story, like Ashwatha Tree Books. Also, choose books on topics you are genuinely interested in or passionate about, and start reading those.
