Washington [US], May 10 (ANI): ‘The Crown’ star Emma Corrin recently spoke candidly about the journey of coming out as nonbinary and queer, as well as her views on gendered award categories.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 28-year-old actor, who publicly came out as nonbinary in 2021 and uses they/them pronouns, discussed how their own identity journey intertwined with their artistic endeavours, particularly their role in the West End adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s ‘Orlando.’

Corrin praised the story’s nuanced portrayal of gender identity, noting that it provided both questions and answers that resonated deeply with their own journey.

Regarding gendered award categories, Corrin expressed mixed feelings, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While they acknowledged the progress made by some award shows, such as the Independent Spirit Awards, in eliminating gendered categories, they also highlighted the need for further inclusivity and representation of nonbinary voices in the discussion.

Corrin emphasised the importance of visibility for nonbinary performers, noting that being nominated in gender-neutral categories like “best lead performance” and “best supporting performance” allows them to feel seen and recognised for their work.

However, they also raised concerns about the potential exclusion of nonbinary performers if gendered categories persist in awards shows.

Reflecting on their own awards eligibility, Corrin emphasised the significance of representation over categorization, stating that the visibility of nonbinary performers is paramount, regardless of the specific award category.

As discussions surrounding gendered award categories continue, Corrin remains hopeful for progress and advocates for the inclusion of diverse voices in shaping the future of award shows. (ANI)
