After the Hema Committee report came out, the Malayalam film industry has been in the headlines continuously. Many big actors and directors of the film industry have been accused of sexual harassment. Let us tell you that in the year 2017, the Kerala government had constituted the Justice Hema Committee, whose objective was to investigate the ill-treatment of women in the film industry and recently this report has been made public through RTI.
After the report came out, first actor Siddiqui, who was also the General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, and filmmaker Ranjit, chairman of Kerala Chamchitra Academy, resigned from the film body. Now Mohanlal has also resigned from the post of President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Along with Mohanlal, other members have also submitted their resignation, after which the entire committee of 17 members has been dissolved.
The Kerala government has taken an important step regarding this turmoil in the Malayalam film industry. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called a high-level meeting with senior police officials and decided to form a seven-member special team to investigate the atrocities on female artists. After the Hema Committee report came out, many female artists have filed complaints with the police accusing big actors of misbehavior and sexual harassment. The seven-member team formed by the Kerala government will take all these complaints under its control and start a fresh investigation.
Along with this, until new members are selected in Amma, an ad hoc board will look after the functioning of the film industry.
