The United States has reiterated its backing for reforms within the United Nations, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), in response to recent comments by Tesla CEO Elon Musk advocating for India’s permanent seat at the UNSC.
US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel affirmed the US stance on UN reforms during a media briefing. Patel referenced President Joe Biden’s previous remarks to the UN General Assembly and Secretary of State’s acknowledgment of the need for reforms within UN institutions, including the UNSC. Patel emphasized the necessity for the UNSC to reflect the realities of the 21st century world.
Musk’s comments earlier this year highlighted the absence of India as a permanent member of the UNSC, labeling it as “absurd” and calling for an overhaul of the current structure. He advocated for a revision of UN bodies to better represent populous nations, with particular emphasis on India’s exclusion despite being the most populous country.
India has long aspired for a permanent seat at the UNSC. President Biden expressed support for India’s bid during the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023. A joint statement issued after bilateral talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Biden reaffirmed the US’s backing for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC, along with a comprehensive UN reform agenda.
The statement underscored the need to strengthen and reform the multilateral system to reflect contemporary realities and reiterated support for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for the term 2028-29.
Currently, the UNSC consists of five permanent members, known as the P5, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These nations possess veto power, while non-permanent members, elected for two-year terms, contribute to the council’s agenda without the veto privilege.
