A Gurugram-based software engineer, Gaurav Sharan, recently outwitted a cyber scammer who attempted to deceive him into updating his PAN details via a fraudulent link masquerading as an HDFC Bank request. Rather than falling prey to the scam, Gaurav Sharan, a cybersecurity analyst, responded with an unusual offer: to redesign the scammer’s fake website for ₹20,000.
The scam unfolded when Gaurav Sharan received a message from someone pretending to be an HDFC Bank representative. The fraudulent message instructed him to click on a link and enter his PAN number. Recognizing the link as a scam, Gaurav Sharan decided to take a different approach. He replied to the scammer, proposing to redesign their fake website to closely resemble the genuine HDFC net banking site, but at a cost of ₹20,000.
Intrigued by the offer, the scammer asked for a sample of Gaurav Sharan’s redesigned site via WhatsApp. Gaurav Sharan’s witty response not only deflected the scam attempt but also turned the situation into a public lesson on the risks of cyber fraud.
Gaurav Sharan shared screenshots of his conversation with the scammer on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). His post, which included the caption “Lesson: Never mess with a developer,” has since gone viral, garnering over 86,000 views. The humorous and creative twist in dealing with the scam has resonated with many, and social media users have embraced hashtags such as “Scam the Scanner” in response.
Gaurav Sharan’s innovative approach highlights the growing need for cybersecurity awareness and the importance of remaining vigilant against online scams. His story serves as a reminder that while technology can be misused for deceit, it can also be leveraged to outsmart those who seek to exploit it.
