With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 set to begin on June 1 in the USA and West Indies, both Oman and Canada have officially named their 15-man squads. Aqib Ilyas will lead Oman, while Saad Bin Zafar has been appointed captain of the Canadian team, marking Canada’s debut in the tournament.
Oman’s squad, announced by Aqib Ilyas, features a blend of experience and youth, including eight veterans from the 2021 T20 World Cup team. Aqib Ilyas, who previously captained Oman in the 2021 edition, expressed his honor and commitment to leading the team to success. The squad also sees the return of former captain Zeeshan Maqsood and will rely on the bowling prowess of left-arm yorker specialist Bilal Khan. Oman’s batting line-up will likely be led by Kashyap Prajapati and Naseem Khushi, with wicket-keeper batter Pratik Athavale also expected to play a crucial role.
Meanwhile, Canada, under the new leadership of all-rounder Saad Bin Zafar, boasts an experienced squad featuring top-order batter Aaron Johnson and left-arm seamer Kaleem Sana. The team will make its first appearance at the T20 World Cup, placed in Group A alongside notable teams like co-hosts USA, India, Pakistan, and Ireland. Coach Pubudu Dassanayake, a former Sri Lankan and Canadian international, has been preparing the team since 2022.
Canada’s inaugural match will be against the USA in Dallas on June 1, following a recent bilateral series victory by the Americans in April. Canada’s squad aims to leverage the experience of its members, with only four players under the age of 30, to make a strong debut on the world stage.
