In a contest dominated by explosive batting and costly fielding errors, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a massive 235 for 4 before restricting Punjab Kings to 202 for 7. Connolly’s heroic 107 not out off 59 deliveries kept PBKS alive briefly during the chase, but the lack of support from the other end ultimately proved decisive as SRH extended their remarkable record of defending 220-plus totals in the IPL.

The win lifted SRH to the top of the IPL 2026 standings with 14 points, overtaking Punjab Kings, who remained on 13 after suffering their third consecutive defeat in the tournament.

The match showcased the batting firepower that has defined Sunrisers Hyderabad’s campaign this season. Aggressive starts from Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma laid the foundation before explosive half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan pushed the total well beyond 230.

Punjab Kings’ fielding collapse became one of the defining aspects of the match. Multiple dropped catches and a missed stumping allowed SRH’s middle order to capitalise fully, turning what could have been a manageable total into a near-impossible chase.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma Deliver Another Explosive Powerplay

Sunrisers Hyderabad once again demonstrated why they possess one of the most destructive opening combinations in the IPL. Head and Abhishek launched an immediate assault on the PBKS bowling attack, helping SRH race to 79 runs in the powerplay.

Abhishek Sharma wasted no time after defending the opening delivery from Arshdeep Singh. He responded by lofting boundaries effortlessly and attacking the pace bowlers with fearless intent. The left-hander hammered Marco Jansen for repeated boundaries, including two sixes in a single over.

While Abhishek attacked from one end, Travis Head gradually found rhythm before unleashing his trademark pull shots. Head punished short deliveries from Arshdeep with consecutive sixes and helped SRH cross the fifty-run mark in just 3.2 overs.

Punjab Kings briefly regained momentum when Lockie Ferguson dismissed Abhishek Sharma, who miscued a shot high into the air. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer completed the catch to provide the breakthrough.

However, the wicket did little to slow SRH’s scoring momentum as Head continued attacking aggressively before falling to Yuzvendra Chahal shortly after the powerplay.

Punjab Kings Pay Heavy Price for Missed Chances

Punjab Kings’ fielding failures proved catastrophic in a match where every dropped chance carried enormous consequences. Ricky Ponting later admitted that catching issues had become “a bit of a virus” for the side, and Wednesday’s performance reflected exactly that concern.

Ishan Kishan survived multiple opportunities early in his innings. PBKS dropped him twice and missed a stumping chance when he was still struggling for fluency. Heinrich Klaasen was also handed a crucial reprieve on a single-digit score.

Those missed chances changed the complexion of the innings completely.

Kishan gradually settled after the early escapes and regained control over his timing. The left-hander attacked Vijaykumar Vyshak brutally during the middle overs, smashing three consecutive sixes to bring up a rapid half-century off just 28 deliveries.

At the other end, Klaasen once again showcased his exceptional consistency this season. The South African wicketkeeper-batter mixed power and placement brilliantly, reaching another fifty while maintaining SRH’s relentless scoring tempo.

The duo stitched together an 88-run partnership in only eight overs, completely shifting momentum away from Punjab Kings.

Nitish Reddy Provides Explosive Finish for SRH

Just when PBKS hoped to slow the scoring during the death overs, Nitish Kumar Reddy added the finishing touch with a blistering cameo.

Recently returning to fitness, Reddy looked in complete rhythm as he targeted the boundary from the moment he arrived at the crease. He pulled Jansen powerfully and later dispatched Ferguson over deep midwicket to keep SRH’s run rate soaring.

Klaasen eventually finished with 69 off 43 balls, while Reddy remained unbeaten on 29 off only 13 deliveries. Their late acceleration ensured SRH crossed the psychologically significant 230-run mark.

The Hyderabad side eventually closed on 235 for 4, a total that immediately placed enormous scoreboard pressure on Punjab Kings.

Pat Cummins Leads Early Collapse of Punjab Kings

The chase began disastrously for PBKS as Pat Cummins produced a tactical masterclass with the new ball.

Cummins cleverly set up opener Priyansh Arya by moving the field deeper, suggesting a fuller delivery. Instead, he delivered a sharp bouncer angled away, inducing a mistimed pull shot that resulted in a superb diving catch from Eshan Malinga.

Nitish Reddy struck immediately upon entering the attack, dismissing Prabhsimran Singh with his very first ball. PBKS lost both openers within seven deliveries.

Captain Shreyas Iyer also failed to stabilise the innings, miscuing a hard-length delivery from Malinga to mid-off. At 57 for 3 after the powerplay, Punjab Kings were already falling behind the required rate.

Marcus Stoinis attempted a counterattack briefly, but once he departed, the burden shifted entirely onto Cooper Connolly.

Cooper Connolly’s Heroic Century Keeps PBKS Alive

Despite wickets falling regularly around him, Cooper Connolly delivered the finest innings of his young IPL career with a magnificent unbeaten century.

The Australian all-rounder had already impressed during his debut IPL season, but Wednesday’s innings elevated his reputation significantly. Connolly combined fearless strokeplay with composure under pressure, taking on SRH’s bowlers despite the rapidly climbing required run rate.

He attacked Cummins during the powerplay and later targeted Malinga with successive boundaries. Even as Punjab lost wickets consistently, Connolly continued rotating strike and finding boundaries to keep the chase mathematically alive.

After reaching his half-century off 34 balls, Connolly accelerated dramatically in the latter stages of the innings. He launched towering sixes against Malinga and eventually brought up his maiden century in any professional format with a sweeping boundary off Shivang Kumar.

Connolly remained unbeaten on 107 from 59 balls, but his effort ultimately lacked support from the rest of the batting lineup. The second-highest contribution from the PBKS innings remained significantly lower, underlining how isolated Connolly’s fight became.

SRH Continue Dominant IPL 2026 Campaign

The victory reinforced Sunrisers Hyderabad’s credentials as one of the strongest batting teams in IPL 2026. Their aggressive approach at the top, coupled with reliable finishing power, has consistently placed opposition bowling attacks under severe pressure throughout the tournament.

The side also benefited from disciplined bowling during crucial middle overs. SRH’s slower-ball variations and spin options restricted PBKS from maintaining the required scoring rate despite Connolly’s resistance.

Left-arm spinners Harsh Dubey and Shivang Kumar effectively controlled the middle phase, while Cummins’ leadership and tactical awareness once again stood out.

For Punjab Kings, the defeat exposed persistent concerns around fielding standards and batting inconsistency. While Connolly’s emergence provides a major positive, the team’s repeated collapses and inability to convert opportunities are becoming increasingly costly.

The loss also ended any hopes of reclaiming the top position in the standings, while SRH strengthened their push toward playoff qualification.

As IPL 2026 enters its decisive phase, Sunrisers Hyderabad now look like genuine title contenders with their explosive batting depth, tactical discipline and growing confidence. Punjab Kings, meanwhile, face increasing pressure to correct fielding lapses and regain winning momentum before the playoff race tightens further.
