Amavasya, or the new moon day, holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. Among all Amavasyas, the one falling in the month of Vaishakh is especially revered for performing ancestral rites such as Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. It is believed that taking a holy dip in sacred rivers and offering water to ancestors on this day brings peace to their souls and invites blessings of prosperity, peace, and well-being for the family.

Vaishakh Amavasya is considered particularly beneficial for those seeking relief from Pitru Dosha, a karmic debt associated with ancestral issues. Rituals performed with devotion on this day help invoke the grace of ancestors and bring auspiciousness into one’s life.

Vaishakh Amavasya Tithi and Observance

According to the Vedic calendar, Vaishakh Amavasya in 2025 will begin on 27 April at 4:49 AM and continue until 1:00 AM on 28 April. It is most auspicious to observe the fast and perform rituals on 27 April. On this day, acts such as bathing in the Ganges, charity, meditation, and devotional singing hold great spiritual merit. The observance purifies the soul, strengthens spiritual practice, and invites ancestral blessings.

Chanting Sacred Hymns for Pitru Peace

Pitru Dosh Nivaran Stotra

Reciting the Pitru Dosh Nivaran Stotra on Vaishakh Amavasya is a powerful way to honor departed souls. The verses pay homage to divine ancestors, celestial sages, and cosmic forces, seeking their guidance and blessings for liberation and harmony. Regular recitation helps reduce ancestral afflictions and fosters spiritual elevation.

Pitru Kavach

The Pitru Kavach is a protective chant that invokes divine energies to shield against negativity and ancestral imbalances. It also requests the purification of obstacles caused by unseen forces. Chanting this Kavach with faith is believed to bring peace to the ancestors and balance to the devotee’s life.

Offering Pind Daan with Sattu

Using sattu (roasted gram flour) in Pind Daan rituals on Vaishakh Amavasya is considered especially meritorious. Sattu is believed to be a favored offering for ancestors. Preparing pinds (ritual balls) with sattu during Shraddha rituals helps pacify ancestral souls and facilitates the removal of Pitru Dosha. When ancestors are pleased, obstacles and suffering are believed to be eliminated, making way for joy and prosperity.

Reciting the Shrimad Bhagavatam

Reading or listening to the Shrimad Bhagavatam on Vaishakh Amavasya is an act of deep spiritual value. This sacred scripture, highly revered by Lord Vishnu, brings peace to ancestral souls and helps them attain higher spiritual realms such as Vaikuntha. The recital of this divine text is also a means for the devotee to receive spiritual insight and divine grace.

Observance of Shani Jayanti

In 2025, Vaishakh Amavasya also coincides with Shani Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Shani (Saturn). Devotees celebrate this day with devotion by visiting Shani temples, offering mustard oil, donating black items such as clothes or footwear, and performing special prayers to seek protection from the malefic effects of Saturn. Worship on this day is believed to reduce obstacles and promote stability and success in life.

Recommended Practices on Vaishakh Amavasya

– Begin the day with a sacred bath in a holy river or pilgrimage site and engage in charitable acts.
– Donate footwear and umbrellas to the needy, helping them find comfort and protection.
– Offer items such as incense, ghee, oil, flowers, sweets, vermilion, and clothing at temples. These offerings are believed to generate positive energy and purify one’s karma.

Vaishakh Amavasya is a spiritually potent occasion that not only honors ancestral lineage but also strengthens one’s spiritual foundation. When observed with sincerity and devotion, it brings lasting peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.
