Speculation is rising in Bihar politics as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha election, sparking discussions about possible changes in the state leadership.

Speculation Intensifies Over Nitish Kumar’s Possible Rajya Sabha Entry

Political discussions in Bihar have intensified after reports suggested that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.

Sources within his party, Janata Dal (United), have indicated that the veteran leader could be nominated to the upper house of Parliament as elections for several Rajya Sabha seats approach later this month.

The development has sparked widespread political speculation about whether Kumar could eventually move from state politics to national politics.

However, leaders from the ruling alliance have dismissed suggestions that such a move would lead to an immediate change in Bihar’s leadership.

Discussion Within JD(U) Leadership

Political activity increased in the state capital Patna after several senior JD(U) leaders held meetings to discuss party strategy.

Senior JD(U) leader and Bihar minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary visited the residence of the party’s national working president Sanjay Jha.

Another close associate of Nitish Kumar, Sanjay Gandhi, who is a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, also participated in the discussions.

Union Minister and JD(U) leader Ramnath Thakur was also present during the meeting.

These meetings focused on organisational matters and the party’s strategy ahead of upcoming elections.

Decision Will Be Taken by Nitish Kumar

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sanjay Gandhi said that the final decision about contesting the Rajya Sabha election rests with Nitish Kumar himself.

According to him, the chief minister will decide whether he wishes to move to the Rajya Sabha.

He also clarified that the meeting was primarily held to discuss strengthening the party’s organisation and preparing for future political challenges.

Despite the ongoing speculation, JD(U) leaders have not officially confirmed whether Kumar will indeed contest the election.

Earlier Speculation About Nishant Kumar

Before the latest reports emerged, there had been speculation in local media that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, might be nominated for a Rajya Sabha seat.

However, recent reports from political sources suggest that Nitish Kumar himself may be the candidate instead.

The possibility of the chief minister entering the Rajya Sabha has therefore become a major topic of discussion in Bihar’s political circles.

Alliance Leaders Reject Resignation Rumours

The speculation about Nitish Kumar’s possible move to the Rajya Sabha also led to rumours that he might step down as chief minister.

However, leaders from the ruling alliance have rejected these claims.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the rumours and said Nitish Kumar continues to lead the Bihar government.

Referring to the festive season of Holi, Singh said such rumours were like jokes often heard during the festival.

“Nitish Kumar ji is our chief minister,” he stated.

Currently, the Bihar government is run by the National Democratic Alliance, which includes the BJP and JD(U).

Rajya Sabha Elections Scheduled

The political developments come as the Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the Rajya Sabha elections.

A total of 37 seats across 10 states will be filled because the terms of current members will end in April 2026.

The election process has already begun.

The official notification for the election was issued on February 26.

The last date for filing nominations is March 5, while scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on March 6.

Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 9.

Voting will be held on March 16, and counting of votes will take place later the same day.

States Where Elections Will Be Held

Rajya Sabha elections will take place in several states including:

Maharashtra

Odisha

Tamil Nadu

West Bengal

Assam

Bihar

Chhattisgarh

Haryana

Himachal Pradesh

Telangana

In Bihar, five Rajya Sabha seats are becoming vacant.

Members of the state legislative assembly will vote to elect the new representatives.

Nitish Kumar’s Long Political Career

Nitish Kumar is widely regarded as one of the most experienced regional leaders in India.

He first became the chief minister of Bihar in 2005 and has held the position multiple times since then.

Over the years, he has led governments formed through different alliances with major national parties.

He has alternated between alliances with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and the opposition Mahagathbandhan.

Despite these shifts, Nitish Kumar has remained the central political figure in Bihar for nearly two decades.

Brief Break in His Tenure

The only major interruption in his tenure as chief minister came between May 2014 and February 2015.

During that period, Jitan Ram Manjhi served as the chief minister of Bihar.

Nitish Kumar later returned to power and continued leading the state government.

BJP’s Growing Influence in Bihar

Political observers have also noted the growing electoral strength of the BJP in Bihar.

In the most recent state assembly election, the BJP won 89 seats in the 243-member assembly, making it the largest party in the ruling alliance.

This has led to speculation that the BJP may seek a larger role in the state’s leadership in the future.

However, leaders from both parties have publicly maintained that the alliance remains stable.

Nitish Kumar’s Role in National Politics

Nitish Kumar has also played important roles in national politics.

Earlier in his career, he served as a Union minister in the central government.

He held key portfolios such as Railways Minister and Agriculture Minister.

His tenure as chief minister has been associated with initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, roads, education and governance in Bihar.

Final Decision Still Awaited

Despite ongoing political speculation, there is no official confirmation yet regarding Nitish Kumar’s possible Rajya Sabha candidacy.

Leaders within JD(U) have emphasised that the final decision lies entirely with the chief minister.

Until an official announcement is made, Nitish Kumar continues to lead the Bihar government while political preparations for the Rajya Sabha elections move forward.
