Civil defense authorities in southern Brazil have reported a staggering death toll of 107 as severe flooding continues to ravage the region. Rescue operations persist amidst the devastation, with authorities bracing for further rainfall and the ensuing challenges in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The flood’s toll was poignantly highlighted by the dramatic rescue of a horse stranded for two days atop a flooded rooftop in a badly affected town. With more rains forecasted, fears mount over escalating water levels in Porto Alegre and neighboring areas, exacerbating the plight of residents already displaced from flooded homes.
Currently, 136 individuals remain missing, and over 165,000 have been evacuated from inundated areas, with rescue efforts employing boats and helicopters.
The floods have wreaked havoc on infrastructure and bridges, impeding access to Porto Alegre. Reports of looting have surfaced amidst the chaos, reflecting the dire situation faced by residents.
Governor Eduardo Leite has projected a staggering 19 billion reais ($3.68 billion) requirement for the state’s reconstruction efforts. Meanwhile, the federal government in Brasilia estimates a fiscal impact of 7.7 billion reais ($1.49 billion), primarily directed towards aiding small businesses affected by the floods.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has acknowledged the ongoing crisis, emphasizing that the full extent of Rio Grande do Sul’s needs will only become apparent once the floodwaters recede. The nation stands united in efforts to support and rebuild the devastated communities in the wake of this catastrophic event.
