Yesterday marked a significant milestone for India’s urban landscape as the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) completed 9 years since its launch on 25 June 2015. This ambitious initiative by the Government of India aimed to transform 100 cities into modern, sustainable urban centers equipped with advanced infrastructure and improved quality of life for residents.
Under the SCM, cities were selected through rigorous competitions spanning four rounds from January 2016 to June 2018. The mission’s primary objective was to harness smart solutions to enhance urban living standards while promoting environmental sustainability. Each city under SCM has become a beacon of innovation, showcasing replicable models that inspire nationwide emulation.
Key Achievements and Implementation Progress
As of 25 June 2024, a significant portion of the allocated funds, amounting to ₹46,387 crore, has been disbursed to the 100 smart cities. Impressively, 93% of these funds have been effectively utilized, reflecting efficient financial management and project execution.
Integrated Command and Control Centers (ICCC) have been established in all 100 smart cities, leveraging cutting-edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time city management. These centers have enhanced operational efficiency across critical areas such as transport, water supply, and waste management.
Enhancing Public Safety
Over 76,000 CCTV surveillance cameras have been deployed, bolstering city-wide security measures. Additionally, the installation of emergency call boxes, public address systems, and traffic enforcement tools has significantly contributed to improving public safety and security.
Infrastructure Development
The SCM has facilitated the development of 12,300 kilometers of smart roads, 6,800 kilometers of water supply systems monitored via SCADA, and the installation of over 50 lakh solar/LED streetlights. These infrastructure improvements have not only enhanced urban aesthetics but also streamlined city operations.
SCM has focused on inclusive development through initiatives like affordable housing, vibrant public spaces, and educational enhancements. It has led to the construction of over 44,000 dwelling units, development of numerous parks and green spaces, and establishment of smart classrooms and health centers across participating cities.
Future Outlook and Impact
Looking ahead, the SCM aims to complete all ongoing projects by its extended deadline in June 2024, further cementing its role in urban rejuvenation. The mission continues to prioritize sustainability, resilience to climate change, and citizen-centric development approaches.
As the Smart Cities Mission celebrates its milestone of 9 years, it remains pivotal in India’s urban transformation journey. By fostering innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, SCM has set a precedent for future urban development initiatives, aiming to create cities that are not just smart but also resilient and responsive to the needs of their residents.
