A mass shooter responsible for the tragic killing of five individuals at an LGBTQ club in Colorado has received an additional 55 life sentences after pleading guilty to hate crimes. Anderson Lee Aldrich, who was already serving five life terms for the 2022 massacre at Club Q in Colorado Springs, faced the sentencing on Tuesday.

US District Judge Charlotte Sweeney imposed the hefty sentence, along with an additional 190 years, emphasizing the severity of Aldrich’s targeted attack on the LGBTQ community. “You went to this community’s safe place and mass-murdered people, but I hope what you learned today is this community is much stronger than you,” Judge Sweeney remarked during the sentencing, which coincided with Pride Month. “This community is stronger than your armor, stronger than your weapons, and it’s sure as heck stronger than your hatred.”

Aldrich had entered Club Q on November 19, 2022, wielding an AR-15-style assault rifle, fatally shooting five people and injuring 22 others. He was subdued by two patrons of the club before police intervened.

Federal prosecutors highlighted Aldrich’s premeditated online activity preceding the attack. According to court documents, he posted hateful sentiments against the LGBTQ community and expressed extremist views, including derogatory remarks about transgender individuals.

Matt Kirsch, Acting US Attorney for the District of Colorado, reaffirmed the government’s stance against hate crimes. “As part of today’s plea, the defendant admitted to committing acts of hate against members of the LGBTQIA+ community,” Kirsch stated after the sentencing. “I want to make it clear that we have no tolerance for hate in this country, and we have no tolerance for hate crimes in Colorado.”

Aldrich’s defense attorneys noted that he identifies as non-binary, although state prosecutors disputed this claim, asserting there was no evidence supporting his identification before the crime.

The Club Q shooting adds to a tragic history of violence against LGBTQ venues in the United States, including the notorious 2016 attack in Orlando, Florida, where 49 lives were lost. Concerns within the LGBTQ community have intensified amidst what they perceive as rising hostility leading up to the upcoming presidential election.

The sentencing serves as a stark reminder of ongoing societal divisions over LGBTQ rights and gun control in the US, issues deeply entangled in the country’s political landscape.
